News Release - April 8, 2009

The 21st World Energy Congress issues a
Call for Technical Papers

Montréal, April 8, 2009 - The World Energy Congress (WEC) organization is pleased to issue its Call for Technical Papers. The foremost international multi-energy forum with exhibits, the 21st WEC Congress will be held in Montréal, Canada, from September 12 to 16, 2010, on the theme Responding now to Global Challenges - Energy in transition for a Living Planet.

The intent of the Call for papers is two-fold: to provide a coherent forum in which to present research results and synthesis, and to encourage in-depth discussions on topics identified as crucial under the Congress theme.  As WEC 2010 Executive Director Stéphane Bertrand notes, “Sharing different experiences and expertise, shaped by distinct social and economic realities, will enable us to take up the challenges currently facing the energy community. Consequently, I would like to invite experts working in energy sectors from every continent to send in their technical papers and thereby help make it possible to respond now to global challenges.”

Experts are invited to submit papers on one of 22 challenges that fall under the four headings described below. Papers must be received before January 15, 2010.

Theme of day 1:
MANAGING THE GROWING ENERGY DEMAND

Theme of day 2:
WHAT IS THE RIGHT ENERGY MIX FOR LONG TERM STABILITY?

Theme of day 3:
ENERGY SOLUTIONS FOR A LIVING PLANET

Theme of day 4:
POLICIES, REGULATIONS AND FINANCING

Detailed specifications and descriptions of the 22 challenges for the call for technical papers are available at www.wecmontreal2010.ca/papers
Authors will also find a hyperlink there for submitting papers.

The World Energy Congress – Montréal 2010: an event not to be missed

WEC 2010 will bring together more than 2,500 world leaders in the field of energy, coming from industry, governments, and international organizations, as well as the media, universities and energy industry associations.

The 21st Congress will be of historic importance, as it comes at a crucial time for the world energy community. The date chosen, September 2010, falls nine months after the 15th Conference of the Parties under the United Nations' Climate Change Convention at Copenhagen and just a few months after the G8 Summit in Canada. The energy industry urgently seeks solutions to "respond now to global challenges," as the situation requires an unprecedented level of cooperation between the energy industry and government, allowance for the realities of emerging economies, and an understanding of the diversity and complexity of the challenges and the evolving needs of the human community.

The World Energy Congress is held every three years under the auspices of the World Energy Council. The Congress is an opportunity for participants to get a better understanding of energy issues and solutions from a global perspective.
